FACT: The majority of local pantries and feeding programs obtain at least 50% of their food from the Regional Food Bank of NENY (near Albany) & the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley (in Cornwall-on-Hudson).
Local food pantries and feeding programs can obtain food from the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley for considerably less money than if they purchased the food from local supermarkets. The Food Bank provides a wide variety of food including fresh produce to member agencies. $1.00 at the Food Bank buys 4 meals!
Therefore, donating money to your local food pantry or feeding program allows them to obtain MORE FOOD for those in need. You can also donate to the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley & specify a member agency to receive a credit for them at the food bank. Donations can be made to a specified food pantry or feeding program through the ADOPT-A-PROGRAM plan at the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley.
Background - The Regional Food Bank of NENY, based in Latham, New York, was created by a group of food pantry coordinators and anti-hunger advocates which began its operation in June of 1982. As the need for food and agency membership increased, a physical presence was needed to provide greater efficiency and food safety. As a result, the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley was founded in 1990 in Newburgh, NY.
In 1996, a 55,000 square foot warehouse in Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York was donated to the Food Bank. This branch warehouse allows increased donations from food companies and improved service to member agencies in the lower Hudson Valley area.
The Food Bank of the Hudson Valley provides food assistance to charitable agencies serving hungry and disadvantaged people. These agencies include Food Pantries, Soup Kitchens, Emergency Shelters & Programs for Youth, Seniors & the Disabled.
In 2012, the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley provided more than 10 million pounds of food to over 360 member agencies in Orange, Ulster, Dutchess, Rockland, Sullivan, and Putnam counties.
For every $1.00 donation received, the Food Bank is able to provide 4 meals to a needy person. They operate efficiently - 85 cents of every dollar goes directly to programs and operations.
